Survey/Project Name: Venus Bay Conservation Park, Conservation Reserve, and environs
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey of vegetation associations within Venus Bay Conservation Reserve, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, to record and assess existing floral values, as part of continuing biological survey of this reserve, the adjacent Venus Bay Conservation Park and coastal environs. NOTE: Data will be used for future environmental-management projects to conserve hinterland, coastal remnant-vegetation, and natural features.

Study Area Description: Coastal plains tesselated sheet, rubble marine and travertine dispositions of limetone and calcretes, overlaying sandstones and granite at depth (UIZ: Gawler Craton). Undulating, low elevations. Average rainfall in Venus Bay CP is 375mm per annum. Area south of 33 degrees 39 minutes and north of 33 degrees and 30 minutes latitudes, 134 degrees and 59 minutes and 134 degrees and 69 minutes longitude. Vegetation varies from Very low woodland to Low open mallee. Overstorey species are Eucalyptus incrassata and E. diversifolia. Understorey dominant is Melaleuca uncinata, interspersed with Melaleuca acuminata and Melaleuca lanceolata var. and Beyeria lechenaultia. Triodia irritans dominates in several disjunct areas. Salt marshes dominate the Venus Bay boundary.
Objectives
         Vegetation: A Preliminary botanical survey of vegetation associations within Venus Bay Conservation Reserve to record and assess existing floral values, as part of continuing Biological survey of this reserve, the adjacent Venus Bay Conservation Park and coastal environs. The collated data will be utilised by Geographic Analysis and Research Unit (GAR), Planning SA and Environmental Database of South Australia (EDBSA) for environmental management projects into the future: to conserve hineterland coastal remnant vegetation and natural features.

Methodology
         Vegetation: Vegetation was documented with a complete list of plant species within a 30 x 30m quadrat using Braun-Blanquet cover abundance scores. Lifeform and reproductive stage was also recorded. Each site was assigned a structural formation. All species were vouchered the first time they were encountered and lodged with the State Herbarium. Physical data such as slope, aspect, landform, surface soil texture and disturbances were collected. Vertebrate presence was also noted.
