Swamp Antechinus Distribution Misc. |
Abstract: |
This project aims to conduct a biological survey from 1999-2001, focussing extensively on remnant Silky Tea-tree (Leptospermum lanigerum) wetland habitat in the South East region of South Australia (SA).
OBJECTIVES:
1. Improve understanding of the distribution, abundance, habitat use and status of the mainland Swamp Antechinus (Antechinus minimus) in the South East of SA;
2. Define in particular, the extent of occurrence of the A. minimus within remnant L. lanigerum wet heath in near coastal areas between Kingston and the Victorian state border;
3. Collect tissue samples that will form the basis of a future genetic study of SA populations of A. minimus.
4. Confirm, and where possible refine, details for any records up to 2001 (some of these records come from other projects and sources.).

Study Area Description: |
1999-2001 Survey focused extensively on remnant Silky tea-tree wetland habitat. Survey sites were grouped into 3 categories: Silky tea-tree wet heath or tall, wet shrubland (has been or is currently influenced by: artificial drainage of surface/ground water; reduced flows of rising coastal springs; degradation through stock grazing, small remnant size and isolation from other remnant vegetation); Dryland tea-tree woodland and/or dry coastal heath habitat (Coastal wattle, Coastal daisy and Coastal bearded-heath); and Brown/Messmate stringybark woodland with a damp heath understorey (characterised by damp, sandy soil and a diverse heath understorey dominated by yacca, hakea and a number of low heath species). |
