Survey/Project Number: 167          Total No. of Sites: 11
Survey/Project Name: Kulkurna Crown Reserve - NSW
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to collect data on species composition and health information in representative sites on Kulkurna Crown Reserve (Kulkurna Station), western New South Wales (NSW). OUTCOMES: Data collection will assist in determining management recommendations for the reserve, and to assist in the broader objective of management of the entire Chowilla floodplain.

Start Date: 22/01/2003      End Date: 08/04/2003
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: Kulkurna Crown Reserve exists within the NSW portion of the Chowilla Floodplain. The area is the headwaters of the Chowilla Floodplain wetland system, which is within the Bookmark Biosphere Reserve System. The Reserve is located due north of the Murray Sunset National Park and provides the link/corridor between Victorian National Park and the SA Biosphere Reserve system. Rainfall is around 270mm per annum. The vegetation is predominantly Black Box Woodland with significant areas of lignum and Red Gum. The area is bordered by the River Murray to the south, the SA border and Chowilla Regional Reserve to the west, Pt. Noola (grazing property to the east and Wompinnie (freehold) to the SE.
Objectives
Vegetation: To collect data on species composition and health information in representative sites on Kulkurna Crown land. Data collection to assist in determining management recommendations for reserve and to assist in the broader objective of management of the Chowilla floodplain.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete list of plant species per 30 x 30m quadrat using Braun/ Blanquet cover abundance scores. Tree and shrub health assessment was also carried out at each quadrat, with additional assessments undertaken opportunistically to provide an overall picture of the overstorey and shrub layer health. Overstorey/ shrub health assessment involved scoring adapted from Grimes (1987) & Lay and Meissner (1985). Tree and perennial shrubs were rated (5-0) for a total of 10 individual trees/ shrubs
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
