Survey/Project Name: Kangaroo Island Pest Protection
Abstract: New arrivals of pests not yet present on Kangaroo Island have the potential to devastate natural ecosystems and primary production. The risk of an accidental or deliberate introduction of damaging pests and diseases is real and the consequences highly significant. Legislation, policy and procedures to protect the island's biodiversity and natural resource-based industries from new species introductions (whether accidental or planned) are poorly developed and fragmented. There is currently no biosecurity strategy containing border detection systems to prevent and manage unwanted introduced species on Kangaroo Island. The objectives of a Biosecurity Strategy are to: - Prevent invaders (pest animals, weeds and diseases) from entering Kangaroo Island through the development of a tight quarantine policy; - Develop early detection systems that allow for rapid responses and eradication of any incursions if high-risk invaders do arrive; and - Provide a strategic framework upon which to assess risk and then manage existing pests that threaten biosecurity.
