PICK SWAMP BIRD MONITORING PROGRAM |
Abstract: |
The Pick Swamp property, abutting the western edge of Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park was purchased by DEH in 2005 to help restore a reprasentative Karst discharge site and wetland system. Pick Swamp has been a grazing property for approximately 45 years. To support grazing the property was cleared, drained and improved with exotic pasture grasses, clovers and fertilizers. The restoration project will allow surface water coverage similar to pre-European times and the deliberate and natural return to indigenous vegetation associations. During this time it is expected that a transitional change will occur in the bird populations of the property. A report titled "Piccaninnie Ponds, Piccaninnie Swamp and Picks Swamp Vegetation
Monitoring Framework" by Jason Nicol, Ben Taylor and Steve Clarke (copy on Corporate data Storage Area) outlines the moitoring program. Survey conducted between 2007-2012.
Main datasets collected as part of the ongoing monitoring include Birds (monthly - 4 transects), Vegetation (periodically -before inundation and post), and photopoints.
