BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 6          Total No. of Sites: 1624
Survey/Project Name: Flinders Management Review
Abstract: This project aims to produce land-system mapping and land-system descriptions in north-east South Australia, for the North Flinders Soil Conservation Board, and the Department for Environment and Heritage Pastoral Management Branch. METHODOLOGY: Sites were selected to represent as many land units/vegetation complexes as possible and be as even in density as possible with about 70-100 sites per 1:50,000 mapsheet. The data contains detailed vegetation and soil data, but no animal data apart from dung, tracks and other traces. REPORT: Greenwood, Graeme. & Pitts, Brenda. & Mitchell, L. A. & South Australia. Department of Environment and Planning. (1989). Flinders Ranges management review : investigation report. Adelaide : S. Aust. Dept. of Environment & Planning

Start Date: 22/08/1984      End Date: 01/10/1991
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: Area consists of north/south trending ridgelines with rolling hills, in between opening out into depositional plains to the east. Rainfall varies from 500mm pa in the south west to less than 200mm pa in the north-east. Small patches of remnant mallee remain on ridges and low hills in the south, remnant native grasslands on rolling hills in the southern central region. Chenopod shrublands dominate the eastern plains. The study boundary has been derived in retrospect (By Lee Heard and Lynne Kajar during 2001). This derived study boundary is based on documentation by Greenwood, Pitts and Mitchell (1989) personal communications with Roger Playfair (who followed on with the project work after Greenwood); and where the majority of sites have been surveyed. The southern block between Port Pirie and Port Augusta has been included as part of the study boundary as a significant number of sites occur here which date from the mid 1980's. Additional sites occur beyond this boundary however because they occur on mapsheets that have not been comprehensively surveyed and no documentation is available accounting for the establishment of these sites, the mapsheets they fall into have not been included in the main study boundary. The full Flinders Ranges Management Review study boundary in Greenwood, Pitts and Mitchell (1989) has not been used as the main study boundary for the survey because it contains a significant number of mapsheets that have no sites and some of the additional sites still remain outside that boundary.
Objectives
Vegetation: Produce land system mapping and land system descriptions for North Flinders Soil Conservation Board and Pastoral Management Branch.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete list of plants identifiable at visit date in a quadrat or transect of variable size. Estimated crown separation ratio used as density rating. Plants flowering at the time of survey were listed.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
