BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 644          Total No. of Sites: 26
Survey/Project Name: Pelican Monitoring (Coorong Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth)
Abstract: The study area includes the Pelican Islands, in the Coorong National Park (CNP) between Woods Well and Salt Creek in South Australia. Historically, pelicans are known to have bred on six islands consisting mainly of residual limestone in the form of rocky spits, caps and escarpments. The height of the islands above high water level varies from <1ft for the southernmost island, to over 20ft for the largest. Vegetation consists of salt tolerant species of annuals and small perennials, although introduced African Boxthorn (Lycium ferocissimum) is notable. The main purpose of monitoring Australian Pelicans is to gain an understanding of population size and breeding ecology. This project is currently being managed by the District Senior Ranger-Ecologist. The survey started in 2006 and is ongoing.
