Survey/Project Name: Scott Creek Prescribed Burn Bird Monitoring
Abstract: This survey number has been established to store bird monitoring data associated with a prescribed burn that was undertaken in Kangaroo Gully, Scott Creek Conservation Park, on 24 April 2007. The focus of the surveys was to monitor the effect of the burn on resident Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens, Hylacola pyrrhopygia parkeri, a nationally endangered taxa. However data on other birds was also collected. Survey methods were as follows: Two mist-netting sessions were undertaken before the burn (one on 7-8 April 2007, the other on 24 April 2007). The intention was to use sightings of these birds pre- and post-fire to follow the fate of individuals and to determine changes in home-ranges of individual birds post fire. The prescribed burn area was systematically and repeatedly surveyed on foot for 11 days before and 15 days immediately after the burn, in autumn 2007. The area was subsequently surveyed for 20 days each at circa six months (spring 2007) and one year (autumn 2008) after the burn, and for six days at two years after the burn (winter 2009). The whole area was covered in a single survey. All the birds seen or heard only in the area were recorded. Call playback was used to assist with detecting Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens during surveys. Playback was usually undertaken in habitat suitable for Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens. Most of the observations were conducted under favourable conditions, on days of calm weather. Continuous observations of how the birds use waterholes (dams) in Kangaroo Gully were also undertaken, before and after the burn. Generally the observation bouts were of one hour each. Dragos Moise was the primary observer but a number of other observers were involved throughout the monitoring, particularly during bird banding.
