Survey/Project Number: 85          Total No. of Sites: 12
Survey/Project Name: Deep Swamp
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to describe the existing fauna and natural vegetation, between 1998 and 2001, as a basis for planning the route for construction of the Fairview Drain, which is part of the Upper South East Dryland Salinity and Flood Mitigation Plan, South East region, South Australia. METHODOLOGY: A biological survey of existing vegetation and fauna was done before vegetation clearance for the Fairview Drain. After the drain was constructed, Native Vegetation Council conditional consent required revegetation of the spoilbanks. Photopoints were set up to monitor and compare two types of revegetation on the spoilbanks: 1. Topsoiling; 2. Topsoil and mulching.

Start Date: 15/01/1996      End Date: 04/06/2001
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: South East freshwater wetland and sand dune complex containing intact native flora and fauna communities. Study area was bounded by the vegetation of the remnant. The boundary is not easily piocked up on cadastral maps. Aerial photos best show the survey area boundry. Refer to floristic vegetation map in the back of the Biological Survey report.
Objectives
Vegetation: To describe the existing natural vegetation, as a basis for planning the route for construction of the Fairview Drain which is part of the Upper South East Dryland Salinity and Flood Mitigation Plan. Visit period 21/10/1998-4/6/2001: The Fairview Drain was constructed through the middle of the Deep Swamp wetland complex. NVC conditional consent for clearance required revegetation of spoilbanks. Two methods to enhance spoilbank revegetation were topsoiling; and topsoiling and mulching. Photopoints have been established on spoilbanks subjected to each type of revegetation methodology. Topsoil and mulch site located on the Fairview Drain 150m west of the James Road Regulator. Topsoil only site located on the Fairview Drain 50 south of the ordinary James Road crossing.
Fauna: To describe the existing fauna, as a basis for planning the route for construction of the Fairview Drain which is part of the Upper South East Dryland Salinity and Flood Mitigation Plan. Visit period 21/10/1998-4/6/2001: "Flora and Fauna Monitoring Program for Deep Swamp, South Australia" Report 2002 Permanantly marked transects parallel with the drain alignment at various distances, the furthermost acting as a control. Bird transects included.
