Survey/Project Name: Monitoring and Evaluation of Reed Removal Trial River Torrens - RBTFP
Abstract: This project is a reed removal trial along the River Torrens, Adelaide region, South Australia. Extremely dense stands of emergent aquatic reeds (Phragmites sp., Typha sp.) are present in some sections of the River Torrens. Such stands provide poor visual amenity to residents and visitors; restrict surface flow; pose a moderate threat to the passage of native fish species; entrain river sediments; and may contribute to reduced water quality under some circumstances. Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges has undertaken a program of trialling methods to reduce unwanted reed growth in the River Torrens over the past two years. This project is part of the broader-project Removal of Barriers and Threats to Fish Passage (RBTFP). Most of the projects under this do not collect biological data. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the program are to: 1. provide open passage for fish, in both upstream and downstream directions, along the lower River Torrens; 2. reduce public concerns regarding the higher risk of flooding associated with excessive reed growth in the River Torrens at the trial location; 3. determine the success of the cutting operations in realising ecological targets. The Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC) previously provided monitoring and evaluation for this program in 2013, and recently provided a second round of monitoring in 2014, forming the basis for this report. Monitoring provided by the AWQC is aimed at supporting the planning, operation and evaluation of removal works, undertaken at the trial site located immediately downstream of the pedestrian bridge connecting Silkes and Reids Roads at Dernancourt. Start Date: 01/01/2013      End Date: 11/11/2014
Survey Type: Invertebrates Only

Study Area Description: River Torrens, Downstream of the pedestrian bridge connecting Silkes and Reids Roads at Dernancourt
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: Macroinvertebrate field picks were conducted in 2014 prior to reed removal on 20 May and post reed-removal on November 11. A standard AusRivas edge sweep sample and riffle kick sample were taken just downstream of the footbridge (see Appendix 1). Macroinvertebrate results are shown in Appendix 3. Note, macroinvertebrates were not collected for field inspection pre-reed removal in 2013 owing to inaccessibility of the habitat due to the high density of reeds. Refer to report for other methods associate with non-biological data collection
