Survey/Project Name: Agamid lizard fossil Id's & palaeoenvironmental reconstructions -southern Aust.
Abstract: This project aims to identify agamid lizards from southern Australian fossil assemblages, and to make inferences about past environmental conditions. Project involved examination of agamid maxillae of a range of extant and fossil taxa. Fossil specimens were studied in South Australia from known stratigraphic levels from Blanche Cave (5U6) and Wet Cave (5U10) at the Naracoorte Caves National Park; and Kelly Hill Cave on Kangaroo Island. Computer models based on CT-scan data were used to conduct geometric morphometric analyses on the extant taxa and the most complete fossils. Three different agamid species from Kelly Hill Caves, and five species from Naracoorte Caves were identified, and allowed inferences to be made about past environmental conditions of these areas. Methodology
Vegetation: SAMPLE COLLECTION Fossil material was collected by Dr Liz Reed for BDBSA Project 1051 "Taphonomy and Site Formation - Blanche Cave" and by David Bartholomeuz as per BDBSA Project 1044 "Late Quaternary fossil mammals from Wet Cave" by Dr Matthew McDowell. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL PREPARATION Nil. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL REGISTRATION Fossil material from Naracoorte Caves registered to the Palaeontology Collection of the South Australian Museum (SAM P51898 - P51955). Fossil Material from Kelly Hill Caves yet to be registered SEDIMENTARY ANALYSES Nil for this project. GEOCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSES Geochronological information for the fossil sites generated through the following projects: BDBSA Project 1051 "Taphonomy and Site Formation - Blanche Cave" by Dr Liz Reed BDBSA Project 1044 "Late Quaternary fossil mammals from Wet Cave" by Dr Matthew McDowell. BDBSA Project 1049 "Natural variation in small mammal communities - Wet Cave" by Dr Amy Macken, and BDBSA Project 1040 "Natural variation in small mammal communities - Blanche Cave" by Dr Amy Macken.
