Survey/Project Name: Recovering KI Narrow-leaved Mallee Woodland Threatened Ecological Community- NLM
Abstract: The Kangaroo Island Narrow-leaved Mallee Woodland ecological community (NLM Community) is endemic to the eastern half of Kangaroo Island (KI). It occurs in one of the most heavily cleared parts of KI (only about 15% of native vegetation remaining) and has, itself, been heavily cleared. The NLM Community is consequently highly fragmented and often restricted to roadsides. The NLM Community provides habitat for at least six nationally-listed threatened flora species and another 25 plant species that are listed as threatened under the South Australian National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. A further three nationally listed threatened animals may also use the NLM Community as part of their habitat. This project aims to remove impediments to the recovery of the NLM Community by: 1) Mapping 90% of the distribution of the NLM Community. 2) Undertaking Continuous Video Transect Monitoring of 500km of roadside NLM vegetation to provide a baseline dataset of vegetation condition, structure, diversity, and level of weed invasion. 3) Surveying 200km of roadside vegetation to establish the distribution of EPBC and State listed plant species. 4) Surveying 2,100ha of NLM Community for the presence of Asparagus declinatus (bridal veil) infestation and undertaking bridal veil control and eradication at targeted sites.

Start Date: 27/08/2008      End Date: 02/08/2023
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: The study area of this project is confined to the Eastern Plaines and Dudley Peninsula regions of Kangaroo Island, and roughly encompasses all the land eastward of a line from Dashwood Bay south to Murray Lagoon. The approximate centre of the study area is 737486 6038005 (GDA94 MGA Zone 53).
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: NLM Community extent mapping will be undertaken using existing vegetation mapping spatial layers, and will be further informed by targeted field assessment of vegetation patches to determine vegetation types. Minimum condition thresholds, as stipulated in the Conservation Advice, will then be applied and a final spatial layer of the distribution of the NLM Community produced. Video Monitoring of 500km of roadside vegetation will be undertaken using a vehicle-mounted HD video camera. Pre-determined roads where KI Narrow-leaved Mallee occurs will then be driven at a slow and constant speed and footage of roadside vegetation recorded. This footage will be used as a visual baseline to monitor change-over-time or visually assess the impacts of any natural or anthropogenic disturbance. The distribution of EPBC/State listed plant species and bridal veil amongst KI Narrow-leaved Mallee will be established through a series of roadside surveys spanning 200km and 2,100ha respectively. Individual road segments (intersection to intersection) will be walked along and the location of any EPBC/State listed plant species or bridal veil infestations recorded accurately with a GPS.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
