Survey/Project Number: 146          Total No. of Sites: 28
Survey/Project Name: Threatened South-East Mammal (Van Weenen 1997)
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to determine the habitat requirements and distribution of populations of the threatened mammal species Antechinus minimus (Swamp Antechinus) and Cercartetus nanus unicolor (Eastern Pygmy-possum) in South Australia. Both these species are restricted to remnant native vegetation patches in the south-east of South Australia. Suitable habitat for both species is fragmented and populations are either extremely rare, patchy, or both. Study area was confined to the South East region of South Australia.

Start Date: 01/04/1997      End Date: 31/07/1997
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: Eastern pygmy-possum: field survey targeted woodlands and Banksia heath from the Robe area eastward towards the Victorian border. Swamp Antechinus: Sites were typically characterised by the presence of Silky tea-tree and Cutting grass wet heath habitat. Sites were usually isolated due to land clearance and/or degraded by sheep and cattle grazing. Other habitats sampled included open cliff-top vegetation interspersed with patches of tussock grass and dense Coast tussock-grass. Robe area eastward towards the Victorian border, bounded by Lucindale to the N and Millicent to the S.
Objectives
Vegetation: Need to check what happened to this veg data. At each survey site data was collected on the vegetation structure and basic composition. Photographs of the habitats were taken to provide a visual reference of the habitats sampled. No permanent photopoints were established during the survey. At sites trapped to determine the relative abundance of possums, additional information was gathered on the densities of Silver Banksia present by surveying seven, 20 x 20m randomly selected plots within the trapping grid area.
Fauna: Survey to help determine the extent of threatened mammal species distributions in the SE of SA. The main target species were Antechinus minimus maritimus (Swamp Antechinus) and Cercartetus nanus (Eastern Pygmy Possum).
Methodology
Vegetation: Information was gathered on the densities of Silver Banksia by surveying seven, 20 x 20m randomly selected plots within the trapping grid area.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
