BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 2          Total No. of Sites: 246
Survey/Project Name: Yellabinna
Abstract: This project aims to sample the range of accessible vegetation associations systematically for flora and fauna bounded in north-west South Australia, Great Victorian Desert Region 0.5, within the Yellabinna Environmental Association of 7.5.2 and Illkina Environmental Association of 7.5.1. The study area comprises the field of regular, parallel dunes of the Great Victorian Desert, and tracts of salt lakes. Survey sites were visited between April 1984 and April 1995 using the Standard Biological Survey of South Australia methodology. This project is part of the Biological Survey of SA programme run by the Biological Survey and Monitoring group in Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH). Survey areas defined in a DEH spatial layer are managed by DEH Environmental Information Group. Visit period 7 APR 1984 to September 1984: site surveyed during Nullarbor survey. Visit period 5 October 1987 to 21 October 1987: Vegetation and vertebrate survey. Visit period May 1989: vegetation survey. Visit period October - November 1991: vertebrate survey. Visit period 1-31-MAY 2002: Photopoints only.

Start Date: 07/04/1984      End Date: 31/05/2002
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: The study area comprises the field of regular parallel dunes of the Great Victorian Desert and tracts of salt lakes. The dunefield mantles an erosional plain and low outcrops of granite or volcanics form inselbergs or tors within the dunefield. The dunes consist largely of red sand derived from the Western Australian Shield, with a gradual colour change southward to where white sands derived from the coast predominate. Tall shrubland dominated by several species, eg teatree, black oak and false sandalwood, covers dunes and interdune lows. Area is bounded within the Yellabinna Environmental Association of 7.5.2 and Illkina Environmental Association of 7.5.1 bounded in the NW by 30*30', 129*45' and the furthest point in the SE is at 32*30', 135*15. The following 3 mapsheets were added to cover sites that fell outside the existing spatial boundary. Moornaba 5435-02, Pinjarra 5833-04, Kychering 5736-03 and map number 4939-03 which has no name. This was discussed with Tony Robinson in October 2000.
Objectives
Vegetation: To sample the range of accessible vegetation associations systematically for flora and fauna using Standard Biological Survey of South Australia.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Quadrats were 1 x 1 km sampling within each patch produced a complete species list with percentage occurrence recorded for each species.
Fauna: Standard biological survey methods at the time, refer to report.
