Survey/Project Number: 3          Total No. of Sites: 74
Survey/Project Name: Cooper
Abstract: This project aims to record the range of habitats and associated fauna in the Cooper Creek Environmental Association 8.4.4, in north-east South Australia. Sites are selected to cover habitat and environment sub-associations. Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: The Cooper Creek Environmental Association centred on the Cooper Creek Floodplain, west of Innamincka and east of the Birdsville Track, containing areas of floodplain, dunefields and gibber plains. Average rainfall is 150mm pa. Soils are grey, self mulching, cracking clays on pans and floodplains. Red and white siliceous sands on dunes and red massive earths in interdune lows. Gibber plains are crusty, red duplex soils. Upper layer of salt lakes are salt of The Cooper Creek Environmental Association centred on the Cooper Creek Floodplain, west of Innamincka and east of the Birdsville Track, containing areas of floodplain, dunefields and gibber plains. Average rainfall is 150mm pa. Soils are grey, self mulching, cracking clays on pans and floodplains. Red and white siliceous sands on dunes and red massive earths in interdune lows. Gibber plains are crusty, red duplex soils. Upper layer of salt lakes are salt of variable thicknesses. The following mapsheets were added to include sites that were located outside of the study boundary. Cordillo SG54-10 and Strzlecki SH54-02. This was discussed with Tony Robinson in October 2000.
Objectives
Vegetation: Document the range of habitats and associated fauna in the Cooper Creek Environmental Association 8.4.4, North Eastern SA.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: A permanent 15 x 15m quadrat, a second quadrat was also sampled along with a 1km transect with species recorded within a 5m radius of the transect. Visual estimates of projected foliage cover, cover of litter, amount of bare earth were noted. As well as recording soil type, landform and grazing effects. Vegetation types were described by strata present, height and projected foliage of each stratum.
Fauna: Standards of the time. Traplines of 100m drift fence with 10 pitfall traps, 18 boxtraps placed on either side of fence between each pot and 32 travelling out from the end of the drift fence at 15m intervals.
