| Survey/Project Name: | Pre and Post Burn Fire Monitoring of Flora and Fauna (Penambol and SE) |
| Abstract: | This project involves monitoring of species composition pre and post burn, to provide a better understanding of species response to low intensity prescribed burning. The project has currently only commenced in Penambol Conservation Park. It is likely that similar monitoring will commence in other parks that are scheduled for prescribed burning. For each site details are recorded as follow: FLORA (data collected bi-annually in Spring and Summer), within a 5 metre radius of an identified GPS point (PHOTOPOINT). Data recorded includes life form, cover and abundance, life stage, soil pH, slope, aspect and canopy cover Post Burn: within same quadrat - regenerative mechanism (ie. Seed, vegetative) - attribute monitoring. FAUNA (data is collected approximately six months after each burn. Presence/absence pre and post burn recorded for reptiles, mammals, macroinvertebrates and (birds?). (Elliots and pitfalls are used for trapping). Pre-burn data was collected in October 2004 in Penambol Conservation Park. Data collection includes details on tagged Acacia longifolia var. longifolia (Sallow Wattle), including stem length and diameter within quadrats, to monitor effects of fire. Currrently there are limited numbers of photopoints set up in Bucks Lake Game reserve, Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park and Penambol Conservation Park with additional sites yet to be placed across the region as required. A specific focus is being placed on the response of native grasslands. The Bucks Lake Conservation Park sites are monitoring the effects of the Nov 2004 bush fire, the Piccaninnie Ponds and Penambol Conservation Park sites focus on prescribed burning effect on vegetation. |
