Survey/Project Number: 36          Total No. of Sites: 0
Survey/Project Name: Cleland Conservation Park (NPWS 1981)
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey of Cleland Conservation Park, near Adelaide, South Australia, in 1978. METHODOLOGY: 1. Systematically sample vegetation associations, using a series of grids; 2. Map major vegetation associations using photography; 3. Sample vertebrate fauna at a series of sites within each vegetation association in a systematic and repeatable manner.

Start Date: 01/01/1978      End Date: 30/03/1978
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Cleland Conservation Park is located approximately 12km east of Adelaide. It stretches from Waterfall Gully to the summit of Mt Lofty at 727m. It can be divided into three sections: the exposed north facing upper slopes with sandy or sandy loam soils supporting Eucalyptus obliqua/E.baxteri and E.cosmophylla associations. The more sheltered south facing slopes also support an E.obliqua/E.baxteri association on the slopes and E.rubida in the valleys. On the lower slopes the soils have medium textured profiles and support E.leucoxylon and E.leucoxylon/E.viminalis associations and a considerable mixture of European woody weeds. Area contained within the boundaries of Cleland Conservation Park.
Objectives
Vegetation: To sample the vegetation of the range of vegetation associations systematically using a series of grids and to map major vegetation associations using aerial photography.
Fauna: To sample vertebrate fauna at a series of sites within each vegetation association in a systematic and repeatable way.
Methodology
Vegetation: 25 x 25m grid sampling quantitatively with 20 "Patches" within the quadrat at measured intervals. All plants counted within each "Patch" and relative frequency for each species calculated.
Fauna: Traplines of 5-10 pitfall traps (depending on local conditions), 20 Elliott traps and 3 cage traps set for four days and nights. Bird observations - one hour in vicinity of each trapline. Some spotlighting and opportune searching elsewhere in Park.
