Survey/Project Name: Grazing monitoring for Mud Islands
Abstract: This project aims to determine a sustainable grazing regime for the Mud Island Game Reserve, via monitoring of the native vegetation in response to differing stock numbers. The landholders are closely worked with, and stock regimes implemented that aim to benefit the landholder and the conservation of the area. Survey began in 2004 and is still going. Data is collected via a point based system and a subjective visual assessment of the native vegetation. The number of stock that has been on the property is recorded, and the resulting condition of the ground and the native vegetation. The number of stock will then be adjusted, and the effects of a different number of stock assessed seasonally, (four times a year). Attributes recorded include: - dominant plant species list; - condition of vegetation using standard assessment criteria; - changes in distribution and abundance
