Survey/Project Name: Heritage Agreement vegetation monitoring, South Australia agricultural region
Abstract: The aim of this project was to develop a system to monitor Heritage Agreements in the Agricultural Region of South Australia as no monitoring was being done at the time (2000). This would provide baseline information on Heritage Agreements in sufficient detail to determine if conditions have improved within them. Assessments occurred for 35 out of 1200 HA. Data was collected both qualitatively and quantitatively, once from each Heritage Agreement surveyed QUANTITATIVE Survey sites included one or more of the following methods: - line transects of 50 or 100 metres, with a pole every metre. Species touching the pole are recorded. - cover quadrats 100m x 4m wide, divided into 10 x 2 metre segments - all the perrenial species were counted. - Jessup quadrats. The method was selected depending on the vegetation structure. QUALITATIVE - the vegetation associations were recorded and mapped using Microsoft Powerpoint - Heritage Agreements were classified into condition classes. - Threats were graded 1-5, (eg. More threatening weeds such as Bridal Creeper would increase the threat grade). - Plant species list produced. - Rare or threatened species noted (however not targeted). - photographs were taken from specific marrked points and included in the report, but they were not actual "photopoints". Someone could go back and take the same photograph.
