Abstract: |
This project aims to assess and classify remnant vegetation on disused rail corridors in the Mid North region, near Adelaide, South Australia.
The study area, in 1992, included:
1. Southern Flinders Ranges;
2. Northern Mt Lofty Ranges;
3. Northern Yorke Peninsula.
The survey was initiated because the region retained a low percentage of native vegetation and native grasslands were originally widespread in the region.

Hyde M.K. (1994) A Vegetation Survey of Disused Railway Corridors in the Mid-North Region of South Australia July - November 1992. Nature Conservation Society of SA Inc.
Summary
Between July and November 1992; 708 km of disused railway corridors in the Mid-North Region of SA were surveyed for the presence of remnant native vegetation. Sixty-nine sites were documented in detail using a modified biological survey of SA method. More than 3200 plant specimens representing at least 500 taxa were collected and lodged at the State Herbarium of SA. 466 bulk collections of cryptogams were submitted to the herbarium.
Examples of plant species and vegetation communities of conservation significance were recorded and significant native vegetation remnants. Ten sites of high conservation significance were highlighlighted.Remnant native vegetation on rail corridors in some parts of the region represent a substantial proportion of the remaining native vegetation but in some districts the level of disturbance has been high.
The survey noted interest in retaining these corridors as public lands for conservation and local concern about their management in regard to weed, pest animal and fire hazard control.
Recommendations were made for future conservation and management of the rail corridors. |
