Survey/Project Number: 53          Total No. of Sites: 42
Survey/Project Name: Goyder Lagoon
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to examine Goyder Lagoon, north-east South Australia, in order to increase knowledge of the lagoon, and hopefully contribute to its conservation and future management.

Start Date: 04/11/1993      End Date: 26/03/1995
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Goyder Lagoon is a massive flat clay floodplain forming part of the Lower Diamantina floodplain in the Far North East of South Australia. The region receives around 120mm rainfall a year and has an evaporation rate approaching 3 metres per year. It is characterised by swamps, braided channels anabranches and waterholes. Vegetation types include chenopod shrubland, lignum and Queensland bluebush swamps, coolabah woodlands, Acacia shrublands and grassy dunes. Objectives
Vegetation: To increase our knowledge of Goyder Lagoon and hopefully contribute to its conservation and future management.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Each site consists of complete list of plants within a 100 x 100m quadrat using the Braun/Blanquet cover/abundance scores. Quadrat size altered to accommodate additional species unless vegetation altered significantly enough to warrant a different vegetation type (new patch).
Fauna: FA (terrestrial-mammals and reptiles and frogs): per quadrat two fenced pitfall lines 40m long with 5 pitfalls per line and 25 Elliott traps per line. Also 2 cage traps per line. Active searching was conducted (night and day). FA (terrestrial - birds): Fixed-length transects on 1km per quadrat. Birds seen and heard were recorded and details of distance from midline of transect. Other birds outside transect noted - complete bird list with habitat annotation recorded. FA (aquatic - fish): Multi-mesh gillnets, 30mm mesh pained fyke nets 0.55mm mesh open water tunnel, 13mm mesh 20m sieve and 2mm mesh 2m sieve - 6 meso habitats (from 5 macrohabitats were sampled - all were replicated and night replication was carried out). FA (aquatic - invertebrates): 500microm mesh pond net dragged for 20 seconds per microhabitat (6 x 10 mesohabitats). 3 replicate samples taken from each microhabitat.
