BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 584          Total No. of Sites: 538
Survey/Project Name: Kat Fish Reach project (Katarapko Tree Health)
Abstract: The aim of this survey was to assess the health of trees as at 2007 within the study area and map accordingly. The study area consisted of the Murray River National Park that encompasses Katarapko Island to the extent of the 1956 flood level. The tree health assessments methodology was developed in conjunction with CSIRO to determine the health status of dominant trees, where health was assessed on a scale of 0-5 and each tree was assessed by the proportion of original canopy still present. 10 trees were sampled in each transect.

Start Date: 27/08/2007      End Date: 01/09/2007
Survey Type: Veg Dominants (Ground Truth)

Study Area Description: The Murray River NP that encompasses Katarapko Island and Eckerts Creek, to the extent of the 1956 flood level. The extent of the 1956 flood level for the River Murray Floodplain that encompasses Katarapko Island and the portion of the Murray River NP. This area is SW of Berri and NE of Loxton.
Objectives
Vegetation: To assess the health of trees as at 2007 within the study area and map accordingly.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: The tree health assessments were based on the methodology adopted in Survey 134. This method was developed in conjunction with CSIRO to determine the health status of dominant trees, where health was assessed on a scale of 0-5 and each tree was assessed by the proportion of original canopy still present. 0 = dead tree, 1 = unhealthy tree with no original canopy, 2 = tree with < 25% of original canopy present, 3 = tree with 25 - 49% of original canopy present, 4 = tree with 50 - 75% of original canopy present, 5 = tree with >75% of original canopy present. 10 trees were sampled in each transect, with the first tree tagged and bearings recorded to each subsequent tree. A photo was taken at the start of each transect. The easting and northing of each tree was also recorded.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded

Data Distribution Rules: Public Dataset
Project Basis: Vegetation : Monitoring - Vegetation/Ecosystem (ie species records - usually re-visited for ongoing monitoring) NOTE:NON Std Svy methodology may have been used.
