Survey/Project Name: Mount Lofty Ranges Chestnut-rumped Heathwren survey
Abstract: This project was commissioned by SA Department for Environment & Heritage (DEH) to survey Chestnut-rumped Heathwren throughout the Mount Lofty Ranges, near Adelaide, South Australia. METHODOLGY: This work involves distribution/abundance surveys of the Mount Lofty Ranges Chestnut-rumped Heathwren (Hylacola pyrrhopygia parkeri) [Endangered Aust. and SA] for the purposes of determining/monitoring post-fire (prescription, wildfire) habitat use and habitat mapping at selected sites. Collation of existing records has also been carried out. The Project initially started in 2007 (20/4/07-30/11/07) and continued on until 2010 and again in 2013/14 (1/7/2013 - 30/4/2014). Extract from the MLRCRHW_SvySpring2007 Report The South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) is implementing recovery actions for the threatened Mount Lofty Ranges Chestnut-rumped Heathwren (MLR CRHW) Hylacola pyrrhopygia parkeri. These include surveys to improve knowledge of the distribution and habitat requirements of this small bird. A recommendation from a recent assessment of its distribution, habitat and conservation status (Pickett 2007) was that additional targeted surveys of historical and potential locations should be undertaken, and that these ought to be conducted in spring when the species is generally more vocal and thus more detectable. Accordingly, DEH contracted the author to undertake further survey work during 2007. AIMS: 1. Undertake targeted surveys at 15-25 sites (depending on extent and location) during the species' 2007 breeding season; 2. Collect habitat description data at each new confirmed location; 3. Provide a brief report summarising findings and including a map of survey sites, but excluding analysis of habitat data (to be conducted separately at a later date); 4. Provide an updated database of records for the MLR CRHW. This document reports on a survey undertaken during spring 2007.

Start Date: 20/04/2007      End Date: 30/04/2020
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: Mount Lofty Ranges
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
Fauna: To survey threatened (nationally Endangered, Vulnerable in South Australia) Mount Lofty Ranges Chestnut-rumped Heathwren (MLR CRHW) Hylacola pyrrhopygia parkeri during Sep-Oct 2007 to supplement existing distribution and habitat information, which is required for recovery planning purposes.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: MLRCRHW surveys will involve conventional avian transect and area-search techniques, and will incorporate call-broadcasting (pre-recorded calls) in an effort to elicit a response from individuals and thereby facilitate detection.
