Survey/Project Name: Maralinga Tjarutja Animal Track Survey
Abstract: Animal track survey at Maralinga Tjarutja. Survey conducted by DEH in 2007. Information taken from reports prepared by Dr Richard Southgate (2007 and 2009) - noted by E. Krahnert. 2007- Dr Richard Southgate - Envisage Environmental Services, Dr Rachel Paltridge - Desert Wildlife Services, Mr Steve Eldridge - Desert Wildlife Services; 2009 - Dr Richard Southgate - Envisage Environmental Services, Dr Pip Masters, Dr John Read - Ecological Horizons 2007 - A survey relying on track and gait characteristics was conducted to investigate the distribution of animal species in the Maralinga Tjarutja lands of the Alinytjara Wilurara NRM (AW) region. In 2009 the survey aimed to identify the occurrence (presence and absence) of all native and non-native animal species based on sign. Tracks were used as the primary measure of occurrence but the presence of scats, feeding activity and burrows was also noted. Tracks surveys were also conducted in 2011, no report has been provided to E. Krahnert.

Start Date: 27/04/2007      End Date: 01/01/2015
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: *** No study area description recorded
Objectives
Vegetation: Dates changed by E. Krahnert May 2012 as previous ones were too broad.
Fauna: An investigation of animal tracks in the Maralinga Tjarutja lands in the Alinytjara Wilurara NRM (AW) region. The objectives and aims of the present study were fourfold: 1. Investigate the distribution and abundance of native and introduced fauna the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands using the sand plot monitoring technique, thereby providing a baseline from which to compare future trends; 2. Employment of Aboriginal consultants to assist with the sand plot monitoring survey; 3. Investigate correlations between the presence / absence of animals and broad vegetation characteristics; and 4. Investigate correlations between the presence / absence of different animals.
