Survey/Project Name: ABRS/CReefs Red Algal Systematics 09-12
Abstract: This project began in 2009 and had 2 aims: 1) Commence preparation of an Algae of Australia book on the red macroalgae of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) by providing authoritative taxonomic treatments for six families (the most taxonomically abundant red macroalgal groups in the Great Barrier Reef based on recent expeditions, i.e. CReefs): the Acrosymphytaceae, Nemastomataceae, Schyzymeniaceae, Dumontiaceae, Ceramiaceae and Rhodomelaceae (~ 150 species). Comparisons will be made between QLD and South Australian red algal taxa to improve the taxonomic knowledge of local marine flora. 2) DNA barcode of all red algal species from CReefs to assist the taxonomical treatments of the groups listed above plus the remaining families of Rhodophyta. This will provide essential support to this project by helping solving taxonomical problems and considerably speeding up this and future morphological treatments which are a slower, more time-consuming process.
