Survey/Project Name: Sooty Dunnart, Kangaroo Island
Abstract: In order to provide information on distribution, habitat preference and status of the Kangaroo Island Dunnart a field survey was conducted during February and March 1995. After 3348 Elliott trap nights and 1013 pitfall trapnights no dunnarts were captured.Spotlighting, predator stomach content analysis and hair tube sampling also did not detect any dunnarts. Three other small mammal species ( 2 native) were commonly recorded, also six species of frog and 12 species of reptile were recorded. The survey confirmed the rare status of the KI dunnart. From a review of previous records including unconfirmed reports it was found that the species has been recorded from widespread localities on Kangaroo Island and is probably a habitat generalist in Eucalyptus mallee and woodland. Large areas of native vegetation exist on the western end of Kangaroo Island and it is likely that undetected populations persist. Reference: Herbert, T.
