Survey/Project Name: Yumbarra Conservation Park
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey of both flora and fauna in the Yumbarra Conservation Park, western Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, concentrating on the area covered by Dominion and Western Mining mine leases, and establish baseline data against exploration in the area.

Study Area Description: A large area of closely spaced easterly trending sand dunes. Vegetation cover is primarily mallee and Triodia. Smaller areas of sand plains support grasslands and shrublands. Occasional rock outcrops exist. Mean annual rainfall is between 150-350mm. No permanent and few ephemeral water bodies Yumbarra Conservation Park and surrounding area from north of Eyre Highway to 31* latitude bounded in the west by Yatala and in the east by Childara rock hole.
Objectives
         Vegetation: To plan and carry out a biological survey of Yumbarra Conservation Park concentrating on the area covered by Dominion and Western Mining, Mine Leases and establish baseline data against exploration in the area. Additional sites ( YU39 -44 - Vertebrates + Vegetation) have been surveyed by Ecologia consultants - Dec 99. Original field vouchers collected by the Ecologia consultants did not have a 'BS73' prefix. Ecologia have wrongly cited INILA 5534-4 as map sheet used (5534-4 is PENONG 1:50 000 - site descriptions on database have PENONG 5534 1:100 000 as Mapsheet name/No.)
         Fauna: survey dates extended from 31/12/99 to 31/12/01 for a revisit by John Read/Katherine Moseby and Ecologica extended to Jul 2002 for revisit by Ben Waining for photopoints Monitoring in 2004 by Ecological Horizons (fauna) and Ecologia (photopoints and veg)
Methodology
         Vegetation: On the vegetation survey, standard data sheets were filled out which included a description of the location and physical environment and the vegetation within the 1 x 1km quadrat or 100m x 100m patch size. All vascular plants present in each quadrat were recorded and a herbarium specimen of each species encountered was collected. All specimens were lodged with the State Herbarium for identification or verification of field identification. Depending on specimen quality, as many specimens as possible were incorporated into Herbarium collection.
