Survey/Project Name: Reproductive physiology and developmental molecular biology of marsupials
Abstract: Our research aims to understand and provide new information into the reproduction and development of Australia's unique marsupial animals. Marsupials are an ideal model for biomedical research as nearly all of their development takes place after birth in the pouch, unlike us and other mammals where it occurs in utero. Major projects at present investigate the identification of critical genes and molecular mechanisms involved in controlling sexual determination and differentiation; genomic imprinting; the physiology and endocrinology of birth; the uterine, hormonal and metabolic control of embryonic diapause; embryo culture; the application of artificial reproductive technologies to endangered species; and the nutritional components of lactational milk and the effects on pouch young development.
