Survey/Project Name: Hooded Plover Monitoring - FLEURIEU
Abstract: Hooded Plovers are listed as Vulnerable in South Australia under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Hooded Plovers are threatened because they are limited to breeding exclusively on ocean beaches in South Australia, with the rare exception of some coastal saline lakes in parts of the South East and on the Eyre Peninsula. Given the severe pressures placed on the Hooded Plover, BirdLife Australia embarked on a project to promote coexistence between recreationists and beach-nesting birds . This project is funded by the Australian Governments Caring for our Country, the Victorian Government and Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges (AMLR) Natural Resources Management (NRM) Board. The aim of the Beach-nesting Birds (BNB) Project in the Fleurieu region is to establish ongoing monitoring of HP through the: 1. Regular survey of sites/beaches of known HP breeding pairs/nests/chicks/immature birds during breeding months (Aug - March); 2. Estimate populations every two years through a Biennial Count; 3. Assess threats to HP and attempt to alleviate these threats with best management practices; 4. Compare threats and breeding success rates at managed and unmanaged sites. Hooded Plover monitoring has been conducted since 2006 and to 2013 breeding seasons. Data from 2016 is available via Project 1361 - BEACH-NESTING BIRD - BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA.

Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: Data is collected by The Friends of the Hooded Plover Fleurieu Peninsula and coordinated by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board and BirdLife Australia. Beach sites where Hooded Plovers are known to occur on the Fleurieu Peninsula are surveyed by volunteers & NRM during August to March (breeding season) where data such as the location of nesting sites/breeding pairs/chicks/immature birds, breeding success and threats are collected on datasheets. The datasheet template is available at http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au/projects/beach-nesting-birds/for-volunteers. As of September 2012 volunteers now enter data into the MyHoodie Data Portal which was developed by BirdLife Australia. MyHoodie Data Portal requires a login which can be obtained through BirdLife Australia. The Portal can be viewed at: www.portal.myhoodie.com.au
