Survey/Project Number: 884          Total No. of Sites: 30
Survey/Project Name: KI SHOREBIRDS 2020 (+ ALL COASTAL AVES)
Abstract: Background Over the last 8 years, counts of migratory and resident shorebirds have been conducted on Kangaroo Island by volunteers from the Kangaroo Island Shorebirds Group. These counts have highlighted the importance of the region for shorebirds, identifying several areas that support internationally significant numbers of shorebirds. Some sites had not been counted since 2005. The national, Birdlife Australia Shorebirds 2020 Project which is managed by Birds Australia in collaboration with WWF-Australia, has been established in response to a growing concern over declining shorebird populations in Australia and the need to reliably determine population trends for species. Shorebirds are considered good indicators of wetland health and therefore provide a useful tool to assess the condition of wetlands. Six key shorebird areas involving 17 specific Count Areas, which are part of a National Shorebird Network of 150 sites, are surveyed three times a year in spring, summer & winter. Some sites, which have been surveyed since 1983 (not incorporated into current project data) are also counted in autumn and spring. Each Shorebird Area has been selected using criteria designated by the Birds Australia Shorebirds 2020 Project Team and published as Clements et al Identification of Significant Shorebird Areas: thresholds and criteria. Diversity and Distributions (2010)16, 229-242. Selected shorebird areas include: Bay of Shoals, D'Estrees Bay, Cygnet River, Pelican Lagoon, Rush Lagoon and Murray Lagoon. The Kangaroo Island Project extends around 60km of coastline and encompasses areas of low energy embayments with extensive intertidal sandflats, mangrove woodland with intertidal creeks and saltmarshes, high energy sandy ocean beaches backed by dunefields and saline lake systems and rocky reefs and headlands. Previous historical shorebirds data from the 1980's has also been included in this project. Records for this Shorebirds project are now available via the BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA SHOREBIRDS 2020 data extract stored under BDBSA project 1234. This KI Shorebirds project 884 seems to hold additional records to that stored under BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA SHOREBIRDS project.

Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: 2020 Shorebirds Count Forms and information can be accessed at www.shorebirds.org.au As the project proposes to sample such an extensive array of coastal ecosystems over 15 years it was imperative to collect all data relating to coastal birds. The focus remains on the shorebirds but data collection methods include counting waterbirds (geese, swans, ducks, grebes, pelicans, herons & allies, gannets, cormorants), seabirds (gulls and terns), raptors and coastal bush birds.
