Kangaroo Island Penguin Census |
Abstract: |
The purpose of collecting these data is to monitor the distribution and population abundance of Little Penguin colonies on Kangaroo Island. The census is conducted annually during the breeding season in September/October by NR KI staff and community volunteers. Population estimates are obtained from counts of active penguin burrows, on the premise that each active burrow represents two breeding adult penguins. Originally (2006 to 2010), the census was conducted only at the Kingscote colony. In 2011 the project was expanded to include nine additional colonies at Antechamber Bay, Cape Cassini, Cape Willoughby, Emu Bay, Penneshaw, Snellings Beach, Stokes Bay, Vivonne Bay and Western River Cove. Each colony is demarcated by a survey boundary and divided into sections. Survey teams of 3 to 8 individuals (staff and volunteers) search each section for penguin burrows. The coordinates of each burrow found are obtained with a hand-held GPS for mapping purposes and attribute data on activity (ACTIVE/INACTIVE) and occupation (ADULTS/CHICKS/EGGS) are recorded. All data are checked and verified by KI NRM staff. |
