Survey/Project Name: | Monitoring shark species in South Australia |
Abstract: | The 'Monitoring shark species of conservation concern' study was mostly carried out within the Adelaide metropolitan and Gulf St Vincent (GSV) regions of South Australia. In particular, Bronze Whaler (Carcharhinus brachyurus), Dusky Whaler (C. obscurus) and White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) have been identified as species of conservation concern. AIM: The aims of this study were to monitor species of conservation concern, specifically C. brachyurus, C. obscurus, and C. carcharias, in the Adelaide metropolitan region, and to expand the existing acoustic-telemetry array within GSV. The aims were to: 1. provide information about the spatio-temporal movement and residency dynamics of C.brachyurus and C. obscurus 2. increase our knowledge of the timing and length of C. carcharias visitations within the Adelaide coastal region. This project was funded by AMLR NRMB, Neiser Foundation, Nature Foundation SA and Tracking Research for Animal Conservation Society. |

Fauna: | This study used acoustic telemetry to investigate the movement and residency of C. brachyurus, C. obscurus, and C. carcharias, and provide information about the spatiotemporal dynamics of Carcharhinus species. This study also aimed to increase our knowledge of the timing and periods of C. carcharias visitations and potential important habitat within the coastal Adelaide region. |
