Survey/Project Name: | Pilot excavation of Entrance Chamber - Robertson Cave |
Abstract: | This project aims to undertake a pilot excavation in the Entrance Chamber of Robertson Cave (5U17), Naracoorte Caves National Park, South Australia. Project aimed to assess suitability of site for major palaeontological project through the collection and analysis of a vertebrate faunal sample, AMS radiocarbon dating to age the deposit and the collection and analysis of pollen and other plant fossils. Project was built upon by BDBSA Project 1047 Lessons of past climate change - Robertson Cave'. A test pit was excavated in 2008 as a precursor to this project. Fauna: | SAMPLE COLLECTON: 2009 pilot excavation consists of a single 0.5 x 0.5 m pit excavated across 5 layers of 10 cm depth each to a total depth of 60 cm. 2008 test excavation consists of a single pit of unknown dimensions, excavated across 6 layers of 10 cm depth each to a total depth of 70 cm. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL PREPARATION: Sediments from each layer of the pilot were wet screened and sorted for diagnostic elements. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL REGISTRATION: Small mammal fossils from the pilot excavation were identified and registered to the Flinders University fossil collection by Amy Macken (FU9000-9062; 9142-9151).
