Survey/Project Name: JAPANESE SNIPE SURVEY
Abstract: This project aimed to determine the status of Japanese (now Latham's) Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii). The South Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) conducted a surveys between 4/9/1976 and 26/2/1977 and between 3/10/1977 and 1/3/1978, embracing most of two seasons in which snipe may be observed. Fieldwork was mainly restricted to known favoured-localities and habitat of snipe across South Australia, in the Mount Lofty Ranges/Adelaide Plains, Lower Murray and Lakes, and South East regions. Assessments of snipe numbers and habitats were made. Survey records along with unpublished historical records are outlined in a hardcopy report; Cox, J.B (1978) Japanese Snipe in South Australia; Gallinago hardwickii). Prepared for the NPWS. Some specimens were also collected and lodged with South Australian Museum. Sightings were also compiled from results of a survey sent to the South Australian Ornithologists Association (SAOA).
