Survey/Project Name: Mount Lofty Ranges (MLR) Woodland Birds -Gap filling and restoration
Abstract: This project aims to refine landscape restoration targets for declining woodland birds in the Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges (EMLR), South Australia. This project will: 1. Design a survey to fill gaps in recent records of woodland birds from the EMLR; 2. Implement that survey in autumn and spring 2016; 3. Use existing plus new data to prioritise the EMLR for restoration activities aimed at maintaining woodland birds, and generate individual species models for seven priority bird species. PROJECT BACKGROUND/CONTEXT: Approximately 90% of the original woodlands of the Mount Lofty Ranges have been cleared, modified or fragmented, most severely in the last 60 years; affecting, amongst other things, the avifauna dependent on native vegetation (Ford and Howe 1980; Paton et al. 1994; Paton et al. 2004; Szabo et al. 2011). Several common species are declining significantly while some large-bodied generalists are increasing. Further, of particular interest to the rest of Australia, the Mount Lofty Ranges is viewed as a canary-landscape for temperate woodlands (Szabo et al. 2011). Many Natural Management Resources regions across temperate Australia, including Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, are investing in large-scale, long-term habitat restoration and management programs to relieve pressure on their declining woodland avifauna. This survey compliments previous monitoring data from the Nature Conservation Society of SA work (BDBSA Project 667), but has different methodology, and is short term (2 visits over < 6 months) rather than ongoing.

Start Date: 01/03/2016      End Date: 30/11/2016
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: Sparse woodlands on the Eastern side of the southern Mt lofty ranges, from Callington north to Eudunda.
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: The survey will focus new bird survey work into under-sampled environmental settings. 100 sites to be visited once in each of autumn and spring 2016. It is anticipated field work will involve: - Visit each survey site once and: - Undertake a 20 minute/ 2 hectare area search for all bird species: - Spend up to an extra 30 minutes in the vicinity of the survey site (ensuring property boundaries are not crossed) in areas likely to produce records of the seven priority species (see below). If more than 100 metres from the survey site, take an opportune record with a new waypoint: - When survey sites are completed in the morning, and on the way to do surveys in the evening, targeted areas of the landscape will be visited and opportune records taken.

Data Distribution Rules: Public Dataset
