Survey/Project Number: 11          Total No. of Sites: 257
Survey/Project Name: Tallaringa
Abstract: This project aims to assess land use options for the Tallaringa Block (now known as Tallaringa Conservation Park), in the arid/semi arid region, west of Coober Pedy, South Australia. METHODOLOGY: The assessment includes photopoint installation for land system mapping, and for monitoring grazing impact. A biological survey was also undertaken in 1988 and plant survey also in 1990. A few photopoints were established in the early stage of rangeland monitoring in South Australia. Photopoints were placed in many of the Park's plant communities, which have collectively enabled the monitoring of these plant communities to evaluate trends in structure and composition, as well as fire impacts. OBJECTIVE: Conduct a vegetation survey as part of an assessment of the conservation value versus potential pastoral value of this large block of Crown Land. This resulted in the proclamation of the area as Tallaringa Conservation Park.

Start Date: 24/10/1984      End Date: 05/12/1990
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: West of Coober Pedy. Tallaringa is bounded in the west by the Maralinga Tjarntja and to the east by the dog fence along the west boundary of Mabel Creek Pastoral lease to the south and the western boundary of the Mt Willougby pastoral lease to the north. To the north the area abuts the Anangu Pitjantjatjara. Survey sites were also located on Mabel Creek Pastoral Lease east of Tallaringa. The following mapsheets were added to include the sites that fell outside of the existing study boundary. Tallaringa SH-53-05, Phillipson 5769 and Jumbuck 5638 as discussed with Tony Robinson in October 2000.
Objectives
Vegetation: To carry out a vegetation survey as part of an assessment of the conservation value versus potential pastoral value of this large block of Crown Land. This was followed by proclamation of the area as Tallaringa Conservation Park.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Quadrats were 1 x 1km sampling within each patch, a complete species list with percent occurrence for each species was recorded. PMB sites recorded Crown Separation Ratio (CSR) scores. These were converted to Cover Abundance (CA) scores in 2007 based on the following : CRS of 1 went to CA = N, CSR of 2 went to CA = T or N, CSR of 3 went to CA = T, CSR of 4 went to CA = 1. The scores for the dominant species identified were further amended slightly after reviewing the photos.
