Survey/Project Number: 1101          Total No. of Sites: 149
Survey/Project Name: Eastern Hills Bird Survey - AMLR
Abstract: This project aims to better determine the current abundance, distribution and habitats of birds in the Eastern Hills district, near Adelaide, South Australia, with particular emphasis on declining temperate woodland species. The Eastern Hills district supports a relatively-high percentage cover of native woodlands, and has supported most of the declining temperate-woodland birds known from the Mount Lofty Ranges. However, its birds have been largely excluded from previous studies in the region, in part due to lack of formal reserves and restricted access.

Start Date: 31/12/2014      End Date: 28/04/2016
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: Eastern Hills district of AMLR
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: Seventeen properties were chosen for investigation within those parts of the eastern hills which lacked bird data including one Heritage Agreement area. Surveys were conducted on 13 fine days between 31 December 2014 and 28 April 2016, with most surveys in April to September 2015 and April 2016. On each property between two and 17 sites were surveyed. Sites were not chosen at random but were biased towards wooded habitats thought most likely to support the target species, or were at sites were target species were observed. At each site all birds seen or heard during a 20-minute period over 5 ha were recorded, and a GPS used to determine location. Unpublished bird records from the district over the last 20 years were also sourced, primarily from the author's previous observations and Birds SA lists. These come mostly from the area between Tepko and Cambrai. 27 other sites were also surveyed opportunistically. These datasets were loaded under SU1086 CG Misc records and records from EBS wind survey.
