Survey/Project Name: PADDOCK TREES PROJECT - TREES FOR LIFE
Abstract: Our new `Paddock Tree Project', run in conjunction with the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board, will aim to plant 6000 trees over a 3000 ha area near Adelaide, South Australia. Because woodland birds rely on the scattered trees in this landscape, this project is aiming to halt and reverse their decline by working with landholders to establishing the next generation of paddock trees. Paddock trees are visually iconic: provide shade and shelter for stock, improve soil condition and invertebrate diversity, and also provide critical habitat for a range of declining woodland birds. Flora data collected using the Land Unit Reconnaissance method. Bird data collected opportunistically within each land unit. Woodland bird species have declined significantly in the past 10 years, with some already having disappeared from parts of the Adelaide Hills. This coincides with the decline of paddock trees - due to health and old age - which are critical to the health of Australian farming landscapes. Core populations of these rapidly declining woodland birds are still being located in the lower rainfall (450-600 mm annual average), lightly-timbered agricultural landscapes of the northern and eastern Mount Lofty Ranges.

Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Eastern flanks of Mt Lofty Ranges, mid North to Kapunda, and south to Strathalbyn. Shapefile supplied.
Objectives
Vegetation: To provide detailed baseline descriptions of the floristic cover of land units where paddock trees will be planted.
Fauna: To provide baseline surveys of bird species using within areas proposed for paddock tree plantings.
Methodology
Vegetation: Baseline descriptions of the areas to be planted were surveyed using the Reconnaissance Land Unit mapping for planning and decision making. http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/Science/Information_data/Biological_databases_of_South_Australia/information-sharing
