Survey/Project Name: Fire and Soil-Survey Insects and Plants, Kuitpo
Abstract: The study by Penelope Greenslade and G Rosser (SA Museum) examined the responses of soil-surface invertebrates to fire at the level of order for a number of groups. Five survey sites within Kuitpo forest were chosent in an area in which a prescribed brun was to be carried out and three of these were matched with sites outside the area to act as controls. Five pitfall traps were installed at each site. They were run for seven days at each site at monthly or at least seasonal intervals for four years from 1981 to 1984. The study area was burnt in May 1981 when one plot was burnt and in September 1981 when two plots were burnt. A wild fire in 1983 burnt all sies.
