Survey/Project Number: 1152          Total No. of Sites: 0
Survey/Project Name: Leigh Creek Fauna and Flora Survey
Abstract: This project will use standard biological survey techniques to assist in completing an inventory of fauna that is, or may possibly be, present in the mining lease associated with the former Leigh Creek Coal Mine (Petroleum. Exploration Licence 650). METHODOLOGY: Only Elliott Traps will be used (along with opportune searching). Pitfall trapping will not be used due to cultural sensitivities associated with disturbing the ground in the site. Standard treadle Elliott traps (approximately 400 mm by 100 mm by 100 mm) will be used. These will be situated so as to ensure exposure to the elements (wind, sun, rain) is minimised, such as by covering with bark, or hiding under rocky outcrops or shrubs. Traps will be set for the standard four nights as per the Biological Survey of SA methodology. A total of eight trap lines will be established across four survey sites, with each trap line incorporating 15 Elliott traps. Traps will be checked twice per day, morning (before 9 am) and evening (after 4 pm). Traps will be closed for daylight hours (i.e. between 9 am and pm), to help prevent any animals captured during this time being exposed to high temperature conditions. All trap locations will be recorded on GPS and the physical location will be marked with flagging tape. Each trap will have its own independent code, which relates to the trapping area/catchment and site number. Traps will be established so as to be accessible at all times. A strict set of temperature/weather parameters will be used with regard to trap closure (i.e. traps will be closed if weather conditions pose a threat to the wellbeing of animals). Some animals will be collected as voucher specimens following the Wildlife Ethics Committee 'Collection of voucher specimen policy'. All other animals will be released at the point of capture into an area which provides protection from predators. The release will be undertaken at a suitable time for the species (e.g. late evening for nocturnal mammals and reptiles, mid-morning or afternoon for diurnal reptiles. Animals will be kept for up to 12 hours after capture to ensure they are released at the appropriate time. Survey sites will be chosen to ensure that all sites can be checked prior to 9 am in the morning, and in the afternoon prior to 30 minutes before sunset. Survey results will be written up as a report for the client, and all records and specimens will be submitted to the SA Museum and the Biological Database of SA (BDBSA), which will ensure the information is accessible to both scientists and the general public in the future (through the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) database).
