Survey/Project Name: Gawler Ranges NP Integrated Herbivore Management Monitoring Program
Abstract: Gawler Ranges National Park herbivore management programs aim at target densities for populations of goats, rabbits and kangaroos, the principal large herbivores throughout the Park. Three sets of permanent exclosures have been established in various localities to evaluate impacts on vegetation of the controlled populations. Two on Stanley Flat, 1 in Scrubby Valley section of Park. Perennial plant density, plant cover and biomass and animal dung counts have been measured at the sites. Impacts examined include the grazing of Stipa grasslands, regeneration of Acacia oswaldii, browse levels on favoured shrubs and trees (eg Alectryon, Santalum, Exocarpos, Acacia oswaldii). Additional photopoint sites in select areas will supplement exclosure studies.
