Survey/Project Name: Rabbit Calicivirus Disease in Coorong National Park
Abstract: The project aims to monitor the impacts of rabbit grazing on vegetation, native herbivores, small mammals & reptiles at the Loop Rd study site, Coorong National Park. It further attempts to measure the effect of Rabbit Calicivirus Disease on rabbit populations and the extent that this ameliorates environmental damage. The work specifically measures various environmental parameters on paired treatments where rabbits have either been controlled to very low levels using conventional mechanical control techniques or are uncontrolled except by natural means including Rabbit Calicivirus Disease. Environmental parameters measured include: pasture biomass response (including weeds); regeneration of selected perennials; population responses by rabbits, kangaroos & wombats, small mammals, reptiles, frogs & selected birds including Malleefowl on 5 sq km grid; biology of rabbits including epidemiology of Rabbit Calicivirus Disease in population.
