Survey/Project Name: Stick-Nest Rat Release and Monitoring program on St. Peters Island
Abstract: Captive bred Stick-Nest rats were reintroduced at 3 sites on St Peters Island on 4 occasions during the years 1993 - 1994. Intensive monitoring was undertaken during 1993 - 1995, then annually till 1998. 101 animals were monitored for distribution, survival and breeding status using radio transmitters, trapping and tracking observations. Trapping was conducted with Elliotts and pitfalls and tracks recorded along 200 metre transects set up at 11 track monitoring stations located along the road network. Radio-tracking was conducted during initial monitoring to determine home ranges size and overlap which enabled a suitable sized trapping grid to be designed and established. Owl pellets were also collected and examined for Stick-Nest rat remains.

Start Date: 07/06/1993      End Date: 31/08/2016
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: *** No study area description recorded
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
Fauna: Initially multiple SNR data collections conducted during release years in 1993 and 1994 with capture/population data included in monthly and annual reports, data from established trapping grid commenced in 1995. Individual animals tagged and monitored along with other mammals and reptiles, standard data sheet designed for project using individual monitoring stations. Annual surveys of SNR population also included Brush Tailed bettongs. Stock lists with blood line ancestry of animals released on St. Peters Island kept by Adelaide Zoo. Some statistical data collection of health and reproductive status. Radio tracking and established pit-fall & Elliot trap lines located along 200 X 200 m grid. Grid established corresponding to AMG grid coordinates, then lines located using a set magnetic bearing and distance. Data recorded on standard Biological Survey data sheets. Animal locations plotted on grid network to track movements and home range, habitat requirements, physical attributes and reproductive status to determine population dynamics.
