Survey/Project Number: 37          Total No. of Sites: 96
Survey/Project Name: Horsnell Gully Conservation Park (NPWS 1981)
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey of Horsnell Gully Conservation Park, near Adelaide, South Australia, in 1977. METHODOLOGY: 1. Systematically sample vegetation associations, using a series of grids; 2. Map major vegetation associations using photography; 3. Sample vertebrate fauna at a series of sites within each vegetation association in a systematic and repeatable manner.

Start Date: 01/10/1977      End Date: 01/10/1977
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Horsnell Gully Conservation Park is 11km east of the Adelaide GPO above the Adelaide Hills Zone area. It has rugged terrain rising from 240 to 586m and an average rainfall varying from 640 to 1000mm. It forms part of the watershed of Third Creek. Some areas of the lower parts of the park have been cleared in the past and support the following native vegetation associations: Eucalyptus obliqua/E.baxteri and E.fasciculosa open forest and E.cosmophylla/E.baxteri scrub. In the more disturbed area there are some areas of E.leucoxylon woodland while E.camaldulensis woodland occurs in the Third Creek valley. Area contained within the boundaries of Horsnell Gully Conservation Park. There are 2 sites located outside of the current spatial boundary of the park, Patch Id 9715 and 9716. (March 2001).
Objectives
Vegetation: Vegetation: to sample the vegetation of the range of vegetation associations systematically using a series of grids and to map the major vegetation associations using aerial photography.
Fauna: Fauna: to sample vertebrate fauna at a series of sites within each vegetation association in a systematic repeatable way.
Methodology
Vegetation: 25 x 25m grid sampling per quadrat with 20 "patches" within the quadrat at measured intervals. All plants counted within each "patch" and relative frequency for each species calculated.
Fauna: Traplines of 5-10 pitfall traps (depending on local conditions), 20 Elliott traps and 3 cage traps set for four days and nights. Bird observations, one hour in vicinity of each trapline. Some spotlighting and opportune searching elsewhere in Park.
