Survey/Project Name: Location and monitoring of threatened orchids in the South East
Abstract: The core objective of the Threatened Orchid Recovery Project was to prepare and implement existing National Recovery Plans for threatened orchids in South East South Australia. Baseline data regarding the distribution and conservation status of these taxa was collected as part of the information gathering process. Monitoring protocols were developed and used to monitor the success of recovery. Monitoring data includes counts of individuals within subpopulations as well as the collection of life history data for selected subpopulations. Searches were undertaken for selected taxa, however additional opportunistic data relating to non-target taxa was also recorded when available. Project includes line search surveys for rare orchids and recording of species and numbers. Project involves monitoring, including head counts, population dynamics and life history data to determine if populations are increasing or decreasing in size, number and health. Other details are noted for some populations if relevant. Some species are more difficult to identify than others, especially hybrids. If species can not be identified in the field, voucher specimens are taken and sent to Canberra for identification by David Jones. Photographs are taken for each species. Species studied include Swamp Greenhoods, Small Sickle Greenhood, late flowering Helmet Orchid, Maroon Leak Orchid and Little Dip Spider Orchid.

Start Date: 01/04/1978      End Date: 16/01/2019
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: *** No study area description recorded
Objectives
Vegetation: Line search surveys are conducted are conducted for known rare orchid populations. Line searches are also conducted where there are reports of new populations. Line transects record species and numbers, other details are noted if relevant. Regular population searches are conducted involving a group walking around and looking in areas that are considered good potential habitat. If species can not be identified in the field, voucher specimens are taken. Photos are taken for each species PLUS RECORDS ADDED FROM jUNE 2017 sOURCE cASSIE h and records provided by trajic may 2018
