Survey/Project Number: 58          Total No. of Sites: 1209
Survey/Project Name: Pygmy Blue Tongue Project
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey in the Mid North region, near Adelaide, South Australia, to assist in research and ecology of the Pygmy Bluetongue (Tiliqua adelaidensis), in determining the habitat of the species, from 1992 to 1997. BACKGROUND: T. adelaidensis are considered critically endangered in Australia, and were thought to be extinct until their rediscovery in 1992. Between 2005 and 2010 there were 23 known populations of Pygmy Bluetongues in the Mid North. The project during this time aimed to survey and monitor nine known populations of the lizard to develop a better understanding of their population processes.

Start Date: 03/12/1992      End Date: 31/12/2015
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Remnant unploughed, but grazed Lomandra multiflora ssp. dura "tussock grassland" associated with rocky outcrops on the slopes of the ranges around Burra - Hallett. South of 33*25' latitude and north of 33*50' latitude and east of 138*50' longitude and west of 139*15' longitude. Terowie mapsheet 6631-01 was added to include the sites that were located outside of the defined spatial boundary (Mar 2001). 1 Site just outside of existing study boundary Patch Id: 16277 Site Id: 058HAL01
Objectives
Vegetation: Visit period 1/2/2005-31/12/2015: The vegetation cover in 1 hectare quadrats will be recorded.
Fauna: To assist in research and ecology of the Tiliqua adelaidensis, in determining the habitat of the species. Completed. Visit period 1/2/2005-31/12/2015: There are 23 known populations of Pygmy Bluetongues in the Mid North. This project aims to survey and monitor 9 known populations of the lizard to develop a better understanding of their population processes. 1 hectare quadrats will be surveyed and then monitored annually in february. The number of burrows, lizard counts and insects will be recorded.
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete species list in measured 30 x 30m quadrat using Braun/Blanquet cover abundance scores. Percent cover by step-pointing (Cunningham, 1975)
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
