Survey/Project Number: 811          Total No. of Sites: 149
Survey/Project Name: Waterfowl Wetland Survey (100 Sites)
Abstract: The Waterfowl wetlands survey is an annual assessment of 100 wetlands in southern South Australia. The sites are a representative selection of wetlands from the Fleurieu Peninsula, Coorong, South East and Murraylands districts. The survey involves counting the abundance and species richness of waterfowl species and a rapid assessment of wetland condition. Data is used to inform 'sustainable-use' decision making relating to waterfowl open-seasons.

Start Date: 01/10/2003      End Date: 30/11/2027
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: Four regions in South Australia will be surveyed: (I) Murraylands (ii) Coorong (iii) South East Region (iv) Fleurieu Region . A list of the 100 wetland sites is available from NCR Policy.
Objectives
Vegetation: The surveys are undertaken by both volunteers and professionals. They involve a 'point' or 'area' count. The area surveyed and the time taken to survey are documented on a common survey from that is returned to DENR. Participants tally the number of each species observed and 'score' the wetland on: a) % full b) abundance of aquatic veg c) evidence of aquatic fauna.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
