Survey/Project Name: Coorong Lower Lakes Murray Mouth (CLLMM) Bird and Vegetation Assessment
Abstract: The Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth (CLLMM) Recovery Project (2011-16) is a $137 million investment by the South Australian Government's Murray Futures program and the Australian Government to enhance the resilience of this Ramsar listed wetland. As part of the CLLMM Recovery Project, the Vegetation Program undertook revegetation activities throughout the CLLMM region. Bird and vegetation assessments were undertaken between 2013 and 2015 to compare revegetated sites to remnant habitats. These assessments were used as a baseline to gauge the success of the program in increasing habitat availability and species diversity. REFERENCES: Birdlife Australia (2014). Start Date: 01/09/2013      End Date: 01/01/2020
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: All works undertaken as part of the CLLMM Recovery Project were within a 5km radius of Lakes Alexandrina and Albert, the Finnis River, Tookayerta Creek, Currency Creek, the Murray Mouth and the Coorong. Note that some bird and vegetation assessments were undertaken outside of this radius due the lack of suitable remnant sites.
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: Vegetation surveys were undertaken at 214 sites across the CLLMM region in both remnant vegetation and revegetated areas. Vegetation surveys were conducted between October and December in 2013 and 2014, and between September and October in 2015. In 2013 and 2014, a circle of radius 17m was established around each waypoint. Within each cell, all plant species were identified to species level, or were vouchered for subsequent identification. For each species, cover abundance, life form, strata dominance and life stage were estimated using a modified Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. Four 50m transects running north, south, east and west were also established from the central waypoint. The number of individuals for all species of tree, shrub, sedge and grass species that occurred within 1 metre on either side of the 50 metre transect was recorded. In 2015 the vegetation survey methodology changed, and within each site, nine survey points were randomly generated. In remnant sites these were located within a 2 hectare area, and in revegetation sites the points were located within areas that have been mapped by the CLLMM program as revegetation. At each survey point, a quadrat of 10m by 10m was measured out, with the survey point as the centre of the quadrat. Within each quadrat, all plant species were identified to species level, or were vouchered for subsequent identification. For each species, cover abundance, life form, strata dominance and life stage were estimated using a modified Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. Opportune data was also gathered at each site to provide an overview of ongoing management issues. See annual reports for further details.
Fauna: Bird surveys were undertaken at 171 sites located throughout the CLLMM region. Bird surveys were all conducted in spring (September to November) in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in remnants vegetation and revegetated areas. The survey areas consisted of pre-determined two hectare sites. At each site a 20 minute search for bird species over a 2 hectare area surrounding the waypoint (= 80 metre radius) was undertaken. The species observed, including whether they was in or out of the assessment area, method of observation and any notes relating the species (e.g. feeding, flying etc) were recorded. Records included both observed and heard species within the 2ha plot. Each site was visited on three separate occasions. Morning surveys were generally commenced within 4 hours of sunrise, unless weather conditions were suitable for further surveys to be undertaken after this time (i.e. mild conditions, birds still actively calling, detectability unchanged from early morning). Evening surveys were generally conducted within 4 hours of sunset. Any observations of other vertebrate species that could be identified were also recorded (e.g. rabbits, goats, deer, or kangaroos from tracks, scats, skeletons etc.). See annual reports for further details.
