Survey/Project Name: UPPER TORRENS VOLUNTEER WORKING GROUP
Abstract: Since the Upper Torrens Land Management Project (UTLMP) inception in 1998, over 150 landowners in the Upper River Torrens catchment, South Australia, have participated to improve their properties and income. AIM: The UTLMP has assisted landowners to address issues such as: 1. soil erosion 2. salinity and acidity 3. pasture establishment and/or improvement 4. fencing for dams and watercourses 5. revegetation with native trees and shrubs 6. protection of native flora and fauna 7. creation of habitat for birds and native animals 8. maintenance of creeks and watercourses. The UTLMP, along with Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) also supports and facilitates the Volunteer Working Groups for Cromer CP and Porter Scrub CP. Much of these activties are supported by grants gained over the years by the Upper River Torrens Landcare Group. The groups meet on a regular basis to undertake activities such as weed control and fence maintenances along with DEWNR-supported conservation and educational activities which include: 1. bird banding 2. weed mapping 3. plant and animal identification 4. bat sound ID 5. remote camera workshops 6. Bird monitoring (this data will be loaded under seperate project) 7. Flora Workshops All othe records collected from these activties will be entered under this project. Study Area Description: Mt Lofty Ranges, Central Adelaide Hills region, Upper Torrens Land Management Area. UTLMP incorporates areas such as Mt Pleasant, Birdwood, Mt Torrens and Gumeracha. Specifically - Porter Scrub Conservation Park and Cromer Conservation Park, private landholder properties and surrounding areas of conservation significance.
Objectives
         Vegetation: Aim: The aim of this project is for volunteer members to: - Protect and enhance conservation values of Porter Scrub CP and Cromer CP and other surrounding areas of conservation significance; - Continue to participate and increase their skills and knowledge by undertaking various fauna and flora observational, survey, and monitoring methods and weed control activities; - To collect information and contribute their data to the Biological Database of SA (BDBSA).
