Survey/Project Name: Nangwarry Native Forest Reserve - Forestry SA
Abstract: The Scientific Expedition Group (SEG) will undertake a biological survey from 9 to 24 November 2014 on behalf of Forestry SA in the Nangwarry Native Forest Reserve, located south of Penola in the South East region of South Australia. This survey work will build on substantial studies undertaken by Forestry SA and other researchers over the past few decades (>1970s). Historically the reserve has been managed with fire through prescribed burns which ensured a mosaic pattern of remnant vegetation of different fire succession stages. This reduces the impact of wildfire and maximises opportunities for flora and fauna recolonisation of burnt areas, and long term species and community viability and diversity. More recently, Forestry SA have adopted a flexible burning regime based on the successionally responses of native species (flora and fauna) to fire, but this model is dependent on a thorough understanding of species distribution, abundance and their ecological responses to fire. SURVEY: During the 2-week period SEG will undertake surveys on 16 sites chosen to reflect the diverse history of burnt and unburnt vegetation. Where possible sites will build on earlier survey and monitoring activities dating back to the 1970s. Each site will be surveyed over four days, using methodologies based on DEWNR Biological Survey standards. Specimens will be collected (as required) and be lodged with the SA Museum and State Herbarium of South Australia. Data will then need to be loaded into DEWNR Biological Databases of SA to ensure long-term integrity and open access to the information.

Start Date: 09/11/2014      End Date: 24/11/2014
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Nangwarry Native Forest Reserve located south of Penola
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: Over four days each of the 16 sites will be surveyed using methodologies based on DEWNR Biological Survey standards. A suite of other methodologies will also be used including: 1. Flora surveys; 2. Standard quadrat for 2 sites (repeat SE Survey sites); 3. FSA fire monitoring protocol for 14 sites (measuring for selected species cover, abundance and habit); 4. Photopoint site monitoring (permanently marked plots and photos, physical description); 5. Measurements of tree size and hollow formation.
Fauna: Over 4 days each site will be surveyed using methodologies based on DEWNR Biological Survey standards. A suite of other methodologies will also be used including: - Fauna surveys - Trapping (cage, Elliot, pitfall), spotlighting, observation and capture of mammals, reptiles, and insects. Bird presence and abundance (transect based).
